How to Replace the Mattress for Sofa Beds

Guests are arriving for the weekend, and that's wonderful, but all you have to offer them is an uncomfortable, aging mattress sprinkled with your kids' cookie crumbs. There's a solution to the problem: replacing the mattress. Luckily, it's not too difficult to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the old sofa bed and measure the thickness of the mattress. You can purchase a new mattress that is slightly thicker if you want to increase sleeper comfort.

    • 2

Find out which type of mechanism your sofa bed is equipped with. The most common mechanism is the Leggett and Platt-style frame. The sleeper portion of this style mechanism is all metal, and replacing the mattress for it isn't difficult, as long as you don't choose a mattress that's too thick.

    • 3

Decide whether you want to upgrade the quality of your sofa bed mattress. Consider what you're willing (or able) to spend and take an hour or so to shop around for the best price. Check consumer reviews to help you with your choice, and buy your new mattress.

    • 4

Remove the old mattress. Most mattresses are attached with snaps or ties. Undo these, and vacuum the pad underneath. Attach your new sofa bed mattress.

Find replacement mattresses for non-standard styles, such as Ikea sofa beds, Jennifer Convertibles or futons, by contacting the store where they were purchased. Major furniture retailers such as Slumberland also stock sleeper sofa mattresses.
