How to Buy a Waterbed Mattress

If you are not familiar with a water bed you should consider sleeping on one before making an actual purchase. For a person who moves often, it is probably more convenient to own a traditional mattress. A water bed must be emptied before it can be transported. Setting it up again requires filling the mattress and a water treatment. Water beds must also be guarded against punctures that will cause leaking.

Decide between the two types of mattresses. A soft-side mattress has foam sides that support and shape the mattress.
A hard-side mattress is set inside a wood frame because it lacks any other reinforcement along the sides. The wood frame makes it more difficult to enter and exit and makes it the less popular model.

Compare the lifespan of the mattress. The normal life of a water bed mattress is 10 to 15 years. A traditional mattress should be replaced every five to seven years.

    • 3

Consider the maintenance of a water bed. A water bed requires a water conditioner treatment about twice a year. A water mattress must also be cleaned by wiping.

    • 4

Compare the lumbar support. Water beds can have added support placed directly into the water chamber.

Consider a comfort control in a dual bladder mattress model. A dual bladder offers individual comfort choices and should be considered if two people will share the bed.
