How to Drain a Waterbed with Little Effort

With little effort, you can drain a waterbed with a hose in about one hour if you have a hardside waterbed mattress. If you have a softside waterbed mattress, there is only one way to empty the tubes. You must take each tube to the bathtub and empty it out. If you have a mattress in a wooden frame (hardside), you can drain the bed while doing something else.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the waterbed heater. Remove the bedding to expose the fill and drain valve. Pull out the valve. Remove the cap and attach the hose adapter in the fill and drain kit to the valve. The piece winds on the mattress valve.

    • 2

Use a hose long enough to reach from the bed to the water faucet outside. Wind the hose on the other end of the drain piece. Hang the other end of the hose out the window.

    • 3

Place two or three heavy books on each side of the valve on the mattress to weight it down.

Connect the end of the hose outside to the water faucet. Turn on the water for about 15 to 20 seconds to get rid of any air bubbles. Turn off the faucet quickly and unwind the hose from the faucet. Leave the hose lay on the ground. The water will start siphoning out.

Check the waterbed mattress in about 45 minutes to one hour. If the water is done draining, disconnect the hose and drain piece. If it isn't done yet, wait a few more minutes and recheck.
