Best Ways to Store a Mattress

When we replace mattresses, we have a couple of options for dealing with the old one: either store or throw away. You may not want to necessarily toss old mattresses to the curb, especially if you want to save it for a guest room or until a child is old enough for a larger bed. Mattresses aren't small enough to put in a cupboard, and storing them can be a bit tricky.
  1. How to Store a Mattress

    • Choose a mattress storage space that is cool and dry. Avoid the basement if it's damp, and stay away from areas that attract mold or have a bad smell. Lay the mattress flat so all sides receive equal pressure. Avoid placing the mattress in a spot where heavy items will sit on top for a long period of time. To do so will dent the mattress or cause it to buckle. If you're storing the mattress in a basement or area prone to flooding, place on a pallet or homemade wooden rack to keep off the floor. Make sure it's kept away from pets and won't get caught on nails or sharp items.

    Long Term Mattress Storage

    • Storing your mattress in a "breathable" plastic bag will protect it from the elements. Purchase mattress bags at a mattress store or online. Avoid stowing your mattress in a thick plastic cover, as this will encourage condensation. Breathable plastic is enough to protect it from mold, dust and allergens while keeping it moisture-free. Mattresses aren't meant to sit in storage for years, even with proper protection. The longer a mattress sits in storage, the better its chances for structural damage or damage to the fabric.

    Freshening a Mattress After Storage

    • When it's time to remove your mattress from storage, freshen it up before use. It may smell like the storage room, and it's probably a little musty. If the weather is pleasant, lay your mattress outside for several hours to air out. Sprinkling baking soda on the mattress will allow it to absorb any odors or moisture. Vacuum a few hours later to remove the baking soda. A mattress store will also have products for cleaning the mattress or giving it a fresh scent. Use warm soapy water to remove any stains and allow it to dry before using.
