How to Store Mattresses & Box Springs

Few things can be harder on your mattress and box springs than being placed in storage. If stored improperly, your mattress and box springs can be exposed to dust, dirt and water that wear them out faster or can ruin them completely. By taking a few very simple precautions, you can take your mattress and box springs out of storage in the same condition they were in when you stored them.

Things You'll Need

  • Mattress bags
  • Packing tape
  • Cardboard or wooden pallets

Instructions

    • 1

Place your mattress and box springs inside mattress bags to protect them from water, dirt and dust. You can purchase mattress bags at storage facilities with retail sales areas and at moving supply stores, including U-Haul.

    • 2

Seal the end of the mattress bags with packing tape to ensure that nothing can get inside the bags.

    • 3

Place cardboard or wooden pallets on the floor of the storage unit or area where you are storing your mattress and box springs.

    • 4

Stand the mattress and box springs on their ends rather than laying them down flat.
