How to Measure Sheets for a Mattress

The sizes of sheets have changed because mattresses now come with added features. Pillow tops are common in mattresses, and they add a little extra cushion for the sleeper. You can add foam tops to the mattress for added comfort. Standard sheet sizes will no longer accommodate the extra padding, so it is wise to know the size of your mattress before purchasing sheets. Taking the time to measure the mattress will ensure that the sheets you buy will be a perfect fit for your mattress.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all bedding from the mattress before taking any measurements.

    • 2

Measure the length of the mattress by placing the tape measure at the head, or top, of the mattress and extending it to the foot, or bottom, of the mattress. Mark the length on paper.

    • 3

Measure the width of the mattress by placing the measure on the right side of the mattress and extending it to the left side of the mattress. Mark the width on paper.

    • 4

Slip a piece of cardboard between the box spring and the mattress on the right side of the bed. Insert the cardboard 2 feet above the center of the mattress. Allow for several inches of the cardboard to protrude from under the mattress. This cardboard will be used to help measure the depth.

    • 5

Lie on the mattress and have another person hold a second piece of cardboard to use as a measuring guide. This is helpful for a mattress that has a pillow top or extra padding on top.

    • 6

Stand the second cardboard on the cardboard that is between the box spring and the mattress. Gently press the second cardboard next to the mattress and mark the top side of the mattress on the cardboard. Measure the cardboard for depth, and mark the measurement on paper.

    • 7

Repeat the measurement for the depth on the left side of the mattress and at the bottom of the mattress. Use the average of the three measurements for the depth.

    • 8

Compare the size listed on the package of sheets to the measurements of the mattress. Pay special attention to the depth shown on the package.
