How to Fix a Waterbed Hole

Few things can be more frustrating for a waterbed owner than a hole in the mattress. If left unchecked, a small hole can leak a lot of water, making your mattress not as comfortable as you'd like it to be. If enough water leaks out of the mattress, it can also cause damage to your waterbed frame and to the ground below it. Fortunately, if you're dealing with a pinhole or a cut 1/4 inch or smaller, you can easily fix the hole yourself without wasting a lot of time or money by buying a vinyl repair kit from a furniture store or retailer.

Instructions

  1. Finding the Hole

    • 1

Use a dry towel to soak up any water that has leaked from the waterbed mattress into the liner.

    • 2

Place paper towels around the perimeter of the mattress -- between the mattress and the liner. This will help to absorb any leaking water and show you where the hole is.

    • 3

Place pressure on the mattress by laying on it for a few minutes.

    • 4

Look at the paper towels to see which, if any, have soaked up any water -- this is where the hole is. If the hole is on top of the mattress, the paper towels likely won't be wet, but you will notice beads of water forming where the water is leaking through.

    • 5

Circle the hole with a marker so it will be easy to locate when you start fixing the hole.

    Fixing the Hole

    • 6

Remove the cap and plug insert from your waterbed mattress. On most mattresses, the cap and plug insert are located at the foot of the bed.

    • 7

Allow a small amount of air -- enough to create an air bubble -- to enter the mattress. Push this air bubble to the area where your waterbed is leaking.

    • 8

Dry the area around the hole with a towel.

    • 9

Cut a small piece of vinyl (slightly larger than the hole you're patching) from a vinyl repair kit.

    • 10

Place glue from the vinyl repair kit on the patch and place the patch directly over the hole. Allow the patch to rest for five hours before putting any pressure on the mattress.

    • 11

Remove the cap and plug, push the air bubble out of the opening, and replace the cap and plug into the mattress.
