How to Treat Waterbed Mildew

Mildew buildup is one of the downfalls to owning a waterbed. Mildew not only causes an odor that can absorb into your mattress and bedding, but, if left untreated, can cause damage to the mattress, liner and bed frame. There are a couple of common causes of mildew--condensation forming on the outside of the mattress and bacterial buildup within the mattress. Fixing the problem--no matter the cause--is a fairly simple, though time-consuming, process.

Instructions

  1. Treating Mildew on the Outside of a Waterbed

    • 1

Locate the area where the condensation is forming and wipe up the water with a towel.

    • 2

Dissolve baking soda in water and use a towel to wipe the mattress down with the mixture. Repeat the process for the bed's liner, side rails, heater pad and any other areas that were in contact with the condensation or mildew.

    • 3

Wash all of your bedding to remove any odors that might have been absorbed.

Treating Mildew on the Inside of a Waterbed

    • 4

Open the cap and plug from the mattress pull the fill valve out. On most waterbed mattresses, the cap and plug are located at the foot of the bed and the fill valve sits below them.

    • 5

Pour a bottle of Shock Treatment into the fill valve. Shock Treatment helps to eliminate odors from the inside of the waterbed mattress.

    • 6

Place the plug back into the mattress, replace the cap and push the fill valve back into the mattress.

    Preventing Mildew and Bacterial Growth

    • 7

Open the cap and plug and pull out the fill valve from the mattress. The cap and plug are located at the foot of the mattress and the fill valve below them.

    • 8

Pour a bottle of waterbed conditioner into the fill valve. Waterbed conditioner will help to prevent bacteria from growing on the inside of the mattress and will also help to keep the inside of the mattress from drying, cracking and leaking. Conditioner should be added to your mattress twice a year.

Replace the cap and plug, and push the fill valve back into the mattress.
