Double Vs. Queen Mattress Size

A couple of inches here and there might not seem like a whole lot. But when it comes to the extra sleeping space provided by a queen mattress when compared with a double (or full size) mattress those extra inches add up quickly.
  1. Width

    • A double mattress is 54 inches wide, while a queen size mattress is 60 inches wide.

    Length

    • A double mattress is 75 inches long--the same length as a twin or single mattress. A queen size mattress is 80 inches long--the same length as a king size mattress.

    Depth

    • While there is no standard thickness for a double or queen mattress, they can range from 5 inches thick to 20 inches thick, depending on the manufacturer and the type of mattress--i.e. a pillow top will be thicker than a firm mattress.

    Variation

    • A double mattress can also be ordered in an extra long size. These extra long double mattresses are 80 inches long, making them the same length as queen size mattresses.

    Waterbeds

    • Queen size waterbed mattresses are available in two varieties: hardside and softside. Softside queen mattresses share the same size as a standard queen mattress, while hardside queens are "California size," measuring in at 60 inches wide and 84 inches long. Double waterbeds are only available in softside models, so their size is unchanged.
