Air Beds Vs. Water Mattresses

Airbeds are mattresses filled with air. Water mattresses are filled with water. Choosing between the two is easy once you understand the pros and cons of each type of mattress.
  1. History

    • Charles Prior Hall created the first commercially successful water mattress in 1968, but both water mattresses and airbeds were originally created to for use in hospitals.

    Size

    • Airbeds conform to standard twin, full, queen and king sizes. Water mattresses are available in a super single, queen and king size. Only the king size water mattress has the same length and width measurements as a standard size king bed.

    Benefits

    • Both airbeds and water mattresses conform to the body's curves. Waterbeds are available with heating systems.

    Considerations

    • Airbeds are easy to transport and are often used for camping. Water mattresses require a frame and plumbing system and are not easy to transport.

    Warning

    • Some rental agreements prohibit the use of water mattresses, or may require you to carry your own renter's insurance to cover any damage caused by a water mattress.

    Tip

    • When choosing a bed or mattress, always lay on it before making a purchase. It is impossible to judge how you will feel sleeping on it based on written descriptions or photos.
