How to Blow Up an Air Mattress

Check the mattress to determine if it has a built-in electric pump as some air mattresses do. If it does not, you will need a manual or electric air pump.

Purchase a manual or electric air pump from places such as camping stores and sporting goods stores. Ensure that the pump's nozzle will fit your mattress valve; some pumps will come with different size nozzles or list compatible brands on the packaging.

Carefully unroll and lay out the mattress on a flat surface free of debris. If placing the mattress outside, clear away any sticks and rocks, and place a thick blanket or plastic tarp under the mattress to protect it from insects and punctures.

Uncap the mattress valve and connect the pump nozzle to it, making sure it is securely in place. If using an electric pump, plug the power supply into a generator or wall outlet, and turn the unit on after connecting it to the mattress.

If using a manual pump, connect the nozzle and position the pump on a flat surface. Foot pedal pumps require you to push down on a pedal to push air into the mattress. Release the pedal when you push it all the way down, and repeat this process until the mattress is inflated. Handle style pumps work like bike tire pumps, push the handle down all the way before lifting it back up and repeating.

Carefully remove the nozzle from the valve, and quickly replace the valve cap to prevent air from escaping. Cover the mattress with sheets and blankets if you want them on.
