How to Care for a Madras Futon

A madras futon mattress can last for 10 years if it receives proper care. Many people complain that their mattresses start to smell and become thin or lumpy over time. There are a few steps you can take to insure you get your full 10 years out of your madras futon.

Buy a futon cover. Do not use your futon without a cover on it. You will not be able to wash your futon mattress so a cover will keep it from getting dirty. Once there are odors in your futon they will be almost impossible to get out, so a good cover will keep the mattress clean. The cover is something very easy to manage and any spills will be caught by it. It goes on and off the mattress very easily and you zip it up to hold it on. When the cover needs to be cleaned you can take it off and throw it in the washing machine. It would be good to do this about once every two months if you use your futon regularly. Always remember to check the washing instructions that come with the futon cover so that you do not ruin it. If the cover is made from a light material you may need to wash it very delicately. Keep your futon cover out of the sun. The sun will make the color fade and rot the fabric. A leather futon cover is a good choice as it requires very little care.

Rotate your madras futon regularly. This will stop it from becoming lumpy and thinning out. If you use your futon often, rotate it once a month, or just once every few months if you don't use it much. Try to rotate it before you feel any lumps. When you rotate the mattress turn it as well so that you are sitting on a different side of the mattress. When you sit in one area for an extended period of time the contents inside will move over and the material will become thin in that area.

Take your futon outside and air it out once a year. Take off the futon cover and put the futon in the sun for a day. The nice fresh air will lighten up the fibers inside the futon, making your futon fluffier. There is no harm in doing this even twice a year. The fresh air will also take away any unpleasant odors your futon may have.
