How to Choose a Natural Mattress

Choosing a natural mattress will help the environment and your health as well. Synthetic materials can trap moisture, creating an ideal environment for allergens, and the chemicals used to treat mass-produced mattresses can cause allergic reactions, headaches and skin problems. Luckily, mattresses made from natural materials can eliminate these hazards, but they are costly and sometimes uncomfortable. Know your options before you shop to help you choose the right mattress for your bed.

Consider wool. Wool is naturally fire retardant and doesn't require additional chemicals to meet federal standards. It is also moisture resistant, which discourages dust mites and mold. Organic wool is considerably different than standard wool in its environmental impact, so take that into consideration when comparing mattresses.

Check out organic cotton. Organic cotton is unbleached and free of harmful chemicals, although it is still required to be treated with a flame retardant unless you have a doctor's prescription for chemical sensitivities, which will allow you to purchase an untreated mattress. It is used as both outer fabric and batting and is a good choice for comfort.

Check out natural latex. Made from rubber tree sap, natural latex is dense and conforms to one's body. It can be used alone to create a foam mattress, or it can be combined with inner springs to allow for differing comfort levels. It is resistant to mold, mildew and dust mites, making it virtually allergen free.

Know the lingo and read the labels. "Natural" doesn't necessarily mean organic, and natural materials can still be combined with synthetic materials, making it somewhat less than natural. A mattress that claims it is "organic" may only be referring to certain components, not the entire mattress. "Hypoallergenic" doesn't have a standard definition, so it may not mean anything at all.
