When to Replace a Mattress or Turn it Over?

Ultimately, the quality and care of the mattress you own determines how long it lasts. Experts give an approximate time period for the life of a mattress, but it is a costly thing to replace and should be examined thoroughly before being discarded. Turning a mattress over is essential, not only for prolonging the life of the mattress but for assuring you continue to get a good night's sleep. So much of our general health and disposition depends on the quality/quantity of our sleep that the state of our mattresses is nothing to be trifled with.
  1. When to Turn a Mattress Over

    • Mattresses should be turned over on a regular basis. The reason, method, and length of time in between mattress turning is fairly straightforward. You want to turn your mattress to maintain longevity and maximize your comfort. In the first two months of ownership, turn your mattress every two weeks, which helps to break it in. After that, turning it over every four to six months is sufficient. To turn the mattress over always use two people for safety purposes. Begin by turning the mattress 180 degrees until it lies on the bed frame perpendicular to it, lift the bottom end up, flip over and push it back to its original position. (See first reference.)

    When to Replace a Mattress

    • The two main things to consider are how long you've owned the mattress and what condition it's in. If you've had your mattress for eight years or more, it's definitely time for an inspection regardless of how it feels to you. As the mattress deteriorates slowly, your body may slowly become used to it, sacrificing quality sleep without you realizing it. Regardless of how long you've had the mattress, if after regular turns it feels lumpy or uncomfortable, you many need to replace it.

      Look over the mattress thoroughly. Are there any exposed springs or coils? Is the ticking (the fabric covering the mattress) in good shape? Can you see body impressions in the mattress? If the answer is yes, it's time to replace.

      Lay on it with the intention of feeling its quality. Does it feel uneven or lumpy in any place? Do you hear any noises as you change positions? If so, start shopping for a new one.

      Finally, how are you sleeping? If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, or feeling especially tired in the mornings, with no physical ailments that could cause it, you may have a worn out mattress that isn't fitting your needs for a good sleep. As people age and their bodies change, so does their need for support while sleeping.
