Ensure that your mattress and box spring are properly installed. Installing a mattress incorrectly will significantly decrease the quality and life of the mattress. If necessary, contact the store where you purchased the mattress, and ask them for tips on installing the mattress. In most cases, the mattress will need to placed securely on top of a box spring. Then, the box spring and mattress should be placed upon a stable and secure bed frame. You should never place a thin board between the mattress and box spring or bed frame. Although this might seem to help with support, it will actually cause damage to your mattress in the long run.

Flip and rotate your mattress to prevent wearing out a single spot. As you sleep every night, your body leaves an imprint in the mattress. Over time, this imprint becomes settled into the foam, and the mattress permanently takes on this shape. To avoid these impressions, it is necessary to flip and rotate your mattress on a regular basis. To rotate the mattress, simply turn the mattress so the end that was at the head of the bed is now at the foot of the bed. Flipping the mattress involves turning the mattress upside down so the side you have been sleeping on is now facing the box spring. For best results, rotate the mattress 180 degrees every three months, and flip the mattress every six months.

Place a protective pad on top of the mattress to improve its lifespan. A washable mattress pad should be placed between the sheets and the mattress. Mattress pads have a variety of benefits. Not only do they provide some additional comfort and softness, but also protect the mattress from soils and stains.

Place a pillow top pad on top of your mattress. A pillow top is similar to a mattress pad, but it provides significantly more comfort and softness. The pillow top can be used in addition to the protective pad, if preferred. A pillow top commonly consists of deep layers of cushioning foam or down layers. The pillow top can be placed between the mattress and the sheets for a significant improvement in your mattress.
