How to Build a Memory Foam Bed

Memory foam mattresses conform to body contours and offer comforts that conventional mattresses can't match. Memory foam mattresses are usually made of at least two layers of different types of foam. The top layer determines the comfort of the mattress as it conforms to your body contour. Deeper layers of foam are used for support and firmness. Choose the type of foam you want for the different layers and cut them to size yourself.

Instructions

  1. Choose the Best Foam

    • 1

Choose the top layer foam. Memory foam is a specific type of foam that will develop a contour to your body shape and is activated by body heat. The quality of the foam is based on its density. High-quality memory foam is 4 pounds per cubic foot and heavier. Cheaper foams will not be as comfortable and will not last as long. You can purchase memory foam from local retailers, such as upholstery suppliers, and online.

    • 2

Choose the firmness. Very firm memory foam requires more weight to make contours, while less-firm foams allow you to "sink in" quickly. Thick, soft foam allows you to sink in and make a "nest" when you lie down but, if too thick and soft, makes it difficult to change positions after you have settled in.

    • 3

Choose the thickness. Top layers are usually at least 2 inches thick, with high-end mattresses using thicker top layers. The higher-density foams, up to 8 pounds per cubic foot, can be used in a thinner layer with appropriate foundation layers underneath. Sneak into a mattress showroom to get an idea of what density and thickness are to your liking.

Choose the foundation layer. The lower layer, known as the foundation layer, is made of less-expensive visco-elastic foam. This foam does not contour to your body but acts as a resilient force to evenly support the memory foam layer. Choose a foundation layer that is appropriate for the weight of the person that will be using the mattress. Visco-elastic foams come in a variety of firmness and foam densities just like memory foam. Most local retailers and on-line foam distributors carry both memory foams and visco-elastic foams.

Choose the thickness of the foundation layer. The foundation layer is used for extra motion stability or to raise the bed above the foundation of the bed frame. Use a thicker layer for more stability. Check with the manufacturer for the right combination of density and thickness for your weight.

Make the bed frame. The frame should have a solid bottom to support the foam. The sides should be lower than the mattress, so when the mattress is compressed, the sides are not exposed. Foam mattresses should be fitted in a tight-fitting, breathable, mite-proof cover to retain their shape and longevity. Foam mattresses can also be used on platform bed frames.
