Mattresses can be very expensive to buy new. While secondhand mattresses may be cheaper, they can be unsanitary. People who need a new mattress but don't have a lot of money to spend on one may think they have limited options. However, it is rather simple to make your own mattress out of a couple of blankets. All you need is basic sewing skills and some common sewing supplies. Pretty soon you'll have an inexpensive and personalized mattress to suit your needs.

1
Obtain two blankets that are the same size (about 4 feet by 7 feet for a twin-sized mattress). Trim them down if you need to make them the same size.
-
2
Lay the blankets directly on top of each other, right sides together. Sew around all the edges of the blankets, leaving a 6-inch opening in the middle of one of the shorter sides.

Turn the mattress right side out, using the 6-inch opening. Stuff the mattress full of batting. Use a broom handle to get the batting into all of the corners. Hand-sew the 6-inch opening closed.
