How to Set Up a Sleep Number Bed

Select Comfort's Sleep Number beds are unique from ordinary beds in that they are shipped in multiple boxes and must be assembled. Putting together a Sleep Number mattress and foundation requires some careful attention to ensure that all the parts are in their proper place for the bed to work properly. The instructions included in the owner's manual help make this task clear, and the whole bed usually can be assembled within a couple hours.

Instructions

  1. Assembling the Sleep Number Bed Foundation

    • 1

Push the side rails labeled "A" and "B" together firmly and secure them by pushing the pin into the joint with the side labeled "T" on top. Repeat for the other side rails. Position the assembled rails on the floor with the textured sides facing out.

    • 2

Push the end beams into the grooves, positioned with the tabs on the top side. Slide the remaining four support beams into the grooves, working from the center out. Ensure that the ends labeled "A" and "B" match the labels on the side rails when inserting the center support beams.

    • 3

Slide the deck panels into position on top of the existing support rails. They will fit snugly into the tabs and be flush with the sides and ends of the foundation.

    • 4

Place the coverlet over the foundation, positioning the seam at the end that will be the head of the bed. Work slowly and carefully, one corner at a time, to ensure that the coverlet does not rip.

    Assembling the Sleep Number Mattress

    • 5

Open all of the foam comfort pads included with your particular model of Sleep Number bed and set them aside so the foam can expand fully.

    • 6

Place the mattress cover on top of the foundation, positioned with the small holes in the bottom edge of the cover at the head of the bed. Unzip the cover and set it aside. If your model of bed has an additional cover, unzip it as well and set it aside.

    • 7

Position all the elements of the border of the mattress. First, put a corner lock in each corner, then put the foam along the sides of the mattress. Finally, put the foam along the ends of the mattress. All pieces should fit together squarely. Then, put the foam base pad into the area in the middle of the mattress.

    • 8

Install the air chambers by placing them side-by-side in the mattress, with the hose connector at the head of the bed on the bottom side. If your air chambers have zippers between them, zip them together on both the top and bottom.

    • 9

Put the Firmness Control System on the floor at the head of the bed and plug it in. The hoses coming from the Firmness Control System are labeled "L" and "R" and should be attached to the proper sides of the bed when looking at it from the head of the bed. Pass each hose through the hole in the mattress cover and connect it to the proper air chamber, pushing until it clicks.

    • 10

Inflate the air chambers, one at a time, with the remote control. Stop when the remote control display reads "20" as the firmness level. Then insert the last long piece of foam into the space between the air chambers.

    • 11

Install any foam comfort pads that came with your particular model of Sleep Number mattress. The specific instructions for installing foam comfort pads for each model can be found in the owner's manual.

    • 12

Zip the cover back onto the mattress.
