How to Compare Inflatable Beds

Inflatable beds consist of a plastic or latex shell that can be filled with air to create a comfortable sleeping surface. These beds allow homeowners to accommodate overnight guests, and easily can be deflated and stored when they are no longer needed. Inflatable mattresses are also popular with campers. They can enjoy a bit of extra padding instead of sleeping directly on the ground. When comparing inflatable beds, consider factors such as how the bed is filled, its height, type of construction and where the bed will be used.

Instructions

    • 1

See how each model is filled with air. Some beds have built-in electric pumps that fill the bed quickly and easily, while others come with pumps that must be operated by hand. Some models might not include a pump at all, which will require you to purchase one separately.

    • 2

Check the height of each bed. An inflatable bed can range in height from just a few inches to well over a foot. Thinner units might be faster to fill, but also can be harder to get into and out of. Users also might be able to feel the ground underneath under certain conditions if the bed is too thin. Higher air beds might be more comfortable, and can be easier to get into and out of.

    • 3

Compare portability options for each unit. Larger air mattresses will generally be heavier and more difficult to transport and store. Smaller, more portable units often come with a carrying case, and are lightweight enough for camping. If portability is a concern, avoid inflatable beds that come with built-in frames, as they are often too bulky to transport.

    • 4

Evaluate adjustment and control options. Some inflatable beds come with a remote control that allows users to add or remove air without getting out of bed. This can make it easier to find the right level of firmness and comfort.

    • 5

Determine whether each bed is designed for indoor or outdoor use. Outdoor beds will have battery-operated or manual pumps, rather than electric ones. They also might have a thicker "skin" to help minimize punctures and tears, as well as a water-proof covering.

    • 6

Try different types of air beds to find the most comfortable design. Some might feature dual chambers to allow for different levels of firmness on each side. Others have built-in air pocket "coils" to simulate the feel of a traditional spring mattress. Visit a camping store or bedding retailer to try different models.

Check the exterior finish of each inflatable bed to make sure it is comfortable. Air mattresses can have a suede, foam, fabric or vinyl finish. While unpadded vinyl options are easy to clean, they tend to be uncomfortable for some. Beds with built-in padding or soft suede surfaces might be more comfortable.
