Differences in California & Eastern King Size Beds

Before buying a California King bed or an Eastern King bed, which is a standard king, you need to know the differences in width, length, bedding availability and what type of box spring is needed. Another consideration is which mattress would fit a king-size waterbed frame if one just cannot part with a waterbed bedroom set.
  1. Width

    • The width of the California King bed is 72 inches, while the width of the Eastern King bed is 76 inches. The Eastern King bed would allow more room to move when two people are sleeping in it. Each person would have 38 inches of space for sleeping.

    Length

    • The Eastern King bed is 80 inches long and the California King bed is 84 inches long. What the California King loses in width, it makes up for in length, which is idea for those people that are taller and need more room to stretch out comfortable.

    Box Spring

    • The only different in box springs would be the size. Each king bed can have a one-piece box spring or two half-width box springs so that the box springs can be easily moved in tight surroundings of a home.

    Bedding

    • The California King uses bedding especially made for the size mattress. Regular Eastern King sheets will not fit a California King. The California bedding can be hard to find unless you find a place online. Eastern King bedding is standard in most stores.

    Warning

    • If buying a regular mattress for a king size waterbed frame, one would buy a California King. The Eastern King mattress would leave a big gap on the sides and ends of the waterbed frame. The California King fits tight on the sides and has about an inch gap on one end.
