How to Flip a Pillow Top Mattress

Pillow top mattresses are mattresses with an extra layer of pillow-like padding sewn onto the top of the mattresses. Unlike plush and firm mattresses, they cannot be flipped. Flipping a mattress helps ensure even wear and tear over the years which is why you should do it yearly. Consider ways to get the benefits of flipping a mattress without actually flipping it over, including adding padding and rotating the mattress itself.

Move the mattress away from the wall or any furniture to make it easier to maneuver the mattress. If you plan on putting a mattress pad over the mattress, remove the sheets and covers.

    • 2

Ask one person to stand on each end of the mattress: one at the head of the bed and one at the foot of the bed. Lift the mattress up and out of the frame, and rotate it around so that the end that was originally at the head of the bed is now at the foot of the bed. Lower the mattress onto the box spring, making sure it is centered and securely in place.

Place the mattress pad over the mattress; this can help reduce wear and tear on the pillowtop. You can purchase mattress pads at stores that sell mattresses. Wrap each end securely under the corners of the mattress. Replace the sheets and covers.

Try to sleep on a different side of the bed than you usually do from time to time. This will help minimize the occurrence of dents and creases in one side of the mattress.
