There are specially formulated sprays now available in the market that you can spray onto surfaces monthly. Made from a host of natural ingredients, these types of sprays have no adverse effects on human beings and are completely hypoallergenic. You can use them on surfaces like mattresses, pillows, cushions, bed sheets and curtains after cleaning them thoroughly.
Before you use the spray, you should clean the affected area thoroughly. This means that you will have to wash your bed sheets using the hottest water setting on your machine. Dry the sheets in the sun. For a mattress, vacuum it and then set it out in the sun. It is also essential that the area around the mattress receive a good cleaning; either vacuum this area or sweep and mop it using a disinfectant. Once you have thoroughly cleaned the mattress, you can spray the surface of the mattress with the anti-allergen spray of your choice.
Dust mites thrive on the fungus that grows on dead skin cells. Humans shed a significant amount of dead skin cells in a year and this is more than sufficient for a large population of dust mites to live off. Dust mite sprays contain microorganisms that work at eating away organic matter. This takes care of dust mites as well. Some of these products include a zinc complex. There are also companies that specialize in getting rid of dust mites and they have their own unique spray formulations.
There are a few products available in the market like Steri-Fam and BedLam Insecticide, or the Norwex mattress cleaner. You only need to use these sprays two to three times a year. A twin mattress will need around 10 sprays whereas a queen-sized mattress will require 15. Remember to spray directly onto the surface. If there are asthmatics at home, using the spray every four months is fine.
Ensure that you actually have an allergy to dust mites. While the cleaning process with sprays is not harmful to adults, it can make a huge dent in your wallet. The process of cleaning is a long one and it requires an eye for detail. Do not start this project unless you are sure of what you are doing. These sprays should not be used around children and never use them on their mattresses or bedding.
