Determine how firm or soft you'd like the mattress to be. Although you don't want to be sleeping on a hard surface, it is said that firmer mattresses help even out your body weight, making you less sore in the morning. If you prefer softer mattresses, consider getting a firm mattress with a pillow top. The pillow top will make you feel as though you're sleeping on a cloud, but you're still getting the support of the firm mattress.

Test different mattress in the store. Tell the salesman what you like (soft or firm, traditional coil or another material) and your price range. Then, jump up on each bed and spend some time--about 15 minutes--lying on each bed. Lie on the bed the way that you normally sleep to get a feel for the mattress. Don't lie on your back if you're a side sleeper.
