How to Empty a Waterbed Mattress

Water beds are a popular alternative to the traditional coil spring and foam mattress bedding systems. Filling and emptying a water bed is by far the hardest part about using such a sleep system; alternative accessories have been developed to simplify those tasks, making water bed setup and take down almost an easy endeavor rather than a lengthy chore. With the accessory, moving a water bed from room to room can be accomplished in the same amount of time as moving a conventional sleep system.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all sheets, pillows and other bedding from the water bed. Disconnect any auxiliary devices such as heaters and motion makers so that the water bed is free of any electrical devices.

    • 2

Connect a 5/8 inch diameter garden hose securely to the water bed fill and drain kit using the prescribed steps described in the kit's instructions. In most cases the fill kit will contain an adapter that connects to a garden hose as well as the fill spigot on the water bed. The kit simply bridges the size gap between the hose threads and the water bed filler threads.

    • 3

Remove any objects that may be laying on the water bed. Unscrew the water bed filler spigot by twisting it counter clockwise. Do not apply pressure to the water bed or water will flow from the filler spigot. Attach the drain and fill kit connector to the water bed fill spigot by twisting it on clockwise. Make sure the connection is tight.

    • 4

Attach the remaining free end of the 5/8 inch garden hose to a sink spigot. Add approximately 2 gallons of water to the water bed via the hose, making sure that the garden hose is completely filled with water. Turn off the sink spigot.

    • 5

Unscrew the hose from the sink spigot, and place your thumb over the end of the hose to maintain an air tight seal. Lower the end of the hose so that it is lower than the water bed mattress, perhaps down to a shower or tub drain. Release your thumb from the end of the hose, and allow gravity to siphon the water from the mattress into the shower or tub drain. Since the hose is filled with water, gravity and suction will do all the work.

    • 6

Encourage the water to continuously flow from the water bed once the water has almost completely drained from the mattress by raising up the corner of the water bed farthest from the fill spigot. Continue to raise the water bed corners until all the water has been drained away.

    • 7

Detach the drain and fill kit connector from the water bed fill spigot by twisting it counterclockwise. Reattached the water bed fill spigot, and tighten it securely by twisting it clockwise. The water bed may now be moved to a new location, or refilled with fresh water. Wipe up any water spills with a clean dry towel.
