Difference Between Pillow Top & Eurotop

The top layer of a mattress can vary depending on the design, brand and amount of padding added to the mattress form. A Euro top and a pillow top are two mattress top layers available. In the middle of the mattress spectrum, they provide more cushioning than firm mattresses and less than plush mattresses. Easily distinguishable by design and construction, it's only a matter of determining which mattress top is best for you.
  1. Identifying Euro Top

    • Stitching is the most distinguishable characteristic dividing the Euro top from the pillow top. With no measurable gap between the padded layer and the mattress itself, the Euro top is stitched directly to the mattress. It lacks the standard gap found on most mattresses.

    Identifying Pillow Top

    • Designed to have an extra soft feel, pillow top mattresses are made with extra layers of cushioning combined with a firm layer of support. If a pillow top appears to rest higher and seems more thick than a Euro top, it is because of the added space between the top and the mattress. Affixed to a layer of its own, this design creates a gap that increases the height of the entire mattress.

    Size

    • Available in standard mattress sizes of twin, full, queen and king, Euro and pillow top mattresses can accommodate any existing bed. However, sheets can be affected by the pillow top mattress because of the additional space due to the gap between the pillow top and the mattress itself. This might require deeper sheets that can accommodate the added thickness of the pillow top mattress.

    Considerations

    • When selecting between a pillow top and Euro top mattress, always ask the distributor if a trial period is allowed. Testing the mattress in your home for a designated amount of time is always the most effective way to determine which mattress is best for you. Since the two differ aesthetically, it is important to test them for feel as well.

    Warnings

    • When selecting a pillow top or Euro top mattress, it is important to remember that these mattresses cannot be flipped like traditional mattresses. Since the cushioned layer is on one side only, the mattress can only be rotated to alleviate indentations from regular use.
