What Is the Best Way to Clean a Used Mattress?

When you move out on your own or when you need to replace your existing furniture, you may want to go on a bargain hunt. Buying furniture for your home isn't always cheap. One way to cut down on the cost is by buying things used. When you buy a used lamp or table, cleaning it up is usually simple and quick. However, you might not know exactly how you should go about cleaning something less ordinary, like a used mattress. With just a little work, your used mattress will be just like new.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix chlorine bleach with water. You only need to use a few drops of chlorine bleach in a few cups of water to kill the germs.

    • 2

Put on rubber gloves and drip a rag into your bleach/water mixture.

    • 3

Scrub the used mattress using the rag and bleach mixture. If there are any stains on the mattress, you might want to use a scrub brush. Try not to get the mattress too wet.

    • 4

Rinse the mattress using a new rag and a bucket of clean water.

    • 5

Allow the mattress to dry completely. You might want to use a wet/dry vacuum to soak up the remaining liquid.

    • 6

Sprinkle the mattress with baking soda once it's dry. Vacuum up the baking soda. This will help to neutralize any odors from the mattress and the bleach.
