How to Care for Tempur-Pedic Mattresses

The Tempur material for the Tempur-Pedic mattress was originally created by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the purpose of cushioning astronauts during lift-off. The technology was then improved upon by a Swedish foam company, now known as Tempur-Pedic International, Inc. This firm perfected a visco-elastic, temperature sensitive material that uses your own body weight and temperature to adjust and supports you as you sleep. You must take care of your Tempur-Pedic mattress to ensure that you continue receiving a restful night sleep.

Instructions

  1. Routine Care Instructions

    • 1

Place your mattress on a quality foundation. Use a non-spring foundation or an adjustable bed base that is firm and solid-surfaced. Do not place plywood or particle board over the existing foundation prior to placing your mattress.

    • 2

Avoid using heating pads and electric blankets on the mattress. Instead use normal blankets to prevent the constant heating of the Tempur-Pedic materials. Due to its sensitivity to temperature, the constant heating of the mattress will have a negative effect on the Tempur materials ability to conform to your body shape and react to your body's temperature.

    • 3

Refrain from flipping the mattress. Your mattress has a one-side design which makes flipping and rotating unnecessary.

    • 4

Lay your mattress flat when moving. Avoid bending or folding the mattress as you transport it from one location to another. Do not stand the mattress on its side. Refrain from carrying the mattress using the hand holds on the sides; these are for positioning of the mattress only.

    Cleaning the Removable Cover

    • 5

Look at the tags sewn into the mattress to determine if the mattress cover is removable. If you are still uncertain after reading the tags, contact the Tempur-Pedic customer service department at 800-821-6621.

    • 6

Remove the cover by unzipping the top portion of the mattress cover. Wash the unzipped portion of the mattress cover only. Set your washing machine to the "Gentle" cycle and set the water temperature to "Cold" wash. Do not wash the Tempur material. Wash the cover using mild detergents only. Do not use chlorine bleach or harsh stain removers.

    • 7

Remove the cover from the machine and allow it to completely air dry. Alternately, place the cover in the dryer and set it on the coolest setting. Remove the cover when it is only slightly damp and allow it to air dry the rest of the way before placing it back onto the mattress.
