Types of Mattresses for Scandanavian Slat Beds

Scandinavian style beds are often referred to as platform or slatted beds. Their frames make them unique from other beds. Usually only several inches off of the floor and made up of wooden slats to support the mattress, these unique beds do away with the need for a box spring.
  1. Innerspring Mattress

    • An innerspring mattress is supported internally by metal coils. These are the most common type of mattress. There are many different ranges of firmness available in these types of mattresses. One downside is that after they've been used for a period of time the coils can be felt through the matted down cushing on the top, making for an uncomfortable sleep with sore back, neck and shoulders as a result. A more expensive innerspring mattress will have more cushion on the top and wear longer.

    Air Mattress

    • Air Mattresses are typically used for short periods and blown up to accommodate extra guests when a bed isn't available. You can put an air mattress on a slatted bed frame, but it may be a hassle depending on the air mattress you have. There are expensive air mattresses that claim to be more durable and not need constant re-filling of air, but even those are less durable than other types of mattresses. An inexpensive air mattress will develop leaks in the plastic exterior quickly and will have to be filled with more air nightly. By the morning, most of the air will drain out, and you'll be laying on an uncomfortable platform bed frame.

    Foam Mattresses

    • Foam mattresses are very common with slatted frames. They can be made of latex, memory or traditional foam. Memory foam is the most popular for mattresses. Memory foam adheres to the shape of any body while simultaneously supporting it. It is durable and comfortable. Like with any mattresses there are different grades of firmness and thickness. The more you are able and willing to spend the more durable and comfortable your foam mattress will be. When shopping for a mattress it helps to lay on it first. Don't assume you like just one type of mattress. Try out firm, medium and soft mattresses to make sure you have the best one for your needs and preferences.
