How to Choose the Right Futon Mattress

Unlike some other types of furniture, a futon can have a few different functions. Futons can be used in place of couches for sitting, relaxing, entertaining guests or watching television, and they can also be used as beds. Because a futon can be used in place of a standard bed, you might hear the futon's cushion referred to as a futon mattress. There are a few things you should know in order to choose the right futon mattress.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand the difference between the various types of futon mattresses. A 100-percent cotton mattress is heavy, flexible and of medium firmness, but may sag over time. Foam mattresses are comfortable, firm and lighter than 100-percent cotton mattresses, and they don't tend to sag. Polyester mattresses are light, flexible, soft and can be quite rigid. Wool mattresses are rigid, not very flexible and generally more expensive than other choices. An innerspring futon mattress feels more like a traditional mattress, but is heavier and more expensive than other options.

Decide what your primary use for your futon will be. If you're going to use it mainly as a bed and, therefore, keep it unfolded, then you can choose a thicker mattress. However, if you plan to use it as a couch and a bed, you might want to choose a more flexible type of futon mattress.

Consider your comfort preferences. Some people prefer to sleep and sit on very soft surfaces, while others like more rigid and firm surfaces. When choosing your futon mattress, keep your preference in mind; when in doubt, lie or sit on the mattress you're considering, to test it.

Choose the size futon mattress that corresponds with your futon's frame. Sizes are similar to those of traditional mattresses, such as twin, full, queen and king, and sofas, such as loveseat and double ottoman. If you don't have a frame yet, choose a size that fits your body type and the primary function of your futon. Again, when in doubt, visit a few stores and try out some different sizes.
