How to Compare Mattress Sizes

When comparing mattress sizes the length and width are not the only factors to consider. Other factors to compare are the amount of space needed for each person, the length requirements for tall people and the size of the room.
  1. Identification

    • You can identify and compare mattresses by size. The regular twin mattress measures 39-by-75 inches and the extra long twin measures 39-by-80 inches. Full-size or double bed mattresses measure 54-by-75 inches. Queen size mattresses measure 60-by-80 inches. There are two king size mattresses; the eastern king measures 76-by-80 inches and the California king measures 72-by-84 inches.

    Function

    • How a mattress will be used may influence its size. Twin size mattresses are good choices for young children, day beds or trundle beds. Full size mattresses are better suited for guest rooms. Queen size mattresses work well in small master bedrooms. Larger master bedrooms can easily accommodate either the eastern king or the California king size.

    Comfort Considerations

    • Although the full size mattress can accommodate two adults, it is a little tight, only allowing 27 inches in width for each person. It may also be a little short in length for some adults. The queen size is more comfortable allowing 30 inches per person. The eastern king is a good choice for larger adults as it provides the most width per person, 38 inches. California king mattresses are 4 inches longer and better suited for tall people.
