How to Move a Twin Mattress on an SUV's Roof

Moving can become a struggle and on occasion frustrating, especially when you are moving with limited equipment. Having an SUV can make the task of moving a little less frustrating when it comes to moving mattresses. Twin mattresses are small enough to fit on the roof of an SUV. Mattresses of almost any size can be easily moved this way, especially if the SUV is equipped with a luggage rack. Larger mattresses will need additional supports, but the process is the same.

Things You'll Need

  • Bungee cords
  • Rope

Instructions

Place the mattress on top of the SUV luggage rack. If there is no luggage rack, simply place the mattress on top of the SUV roof.

Wrap the hook of the winch strap around one of the bars on the luggage rack. Pull the winch strap over to the opposite side of the SUV, and attach the other hook around a bar of the luggage rack on that side. Repeat this with the other end of the mattress so there are two winch straps going across the middle of the mattress. Bungee cords, or rope can be used in this same way. Connect additional bungee cords until you have the appropriate length needed to cross the SUV, and attach on the opposite side.

Position the winch strap so the winch is upright. Pull and push the winch bar to tighten the strap until the mattress is secure and will not move. The strap will indent into the mattress. Repeat with the other side. If using bungee cords, tighten the bungee cords by removing additional bungee cords until they must be pulled tight to reach the bar on the other side. Rope should be pulled as tight as it will allow.
