How to Measure Futons

A well-fitting futon cover protects the mattress, while looking as neat and closely-fitted as a custom sofa cover. A futon sags and stretches over time, so measuring isn't an exact science, but you usually only need a length and width measurement close enough to categorize the futon in one of three standard sizes, a twin that's 39 by 75 inches, a full that's 54 by 75 inches or a queen that's 60 by 80 inches. Eighty-eight percent of futon mattresses in America are full size, according to "Futon Covers 101." The "loft," or thickness, measurement varies more widely.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the futon out of its frame and lay it flat on the floor.

    • 2

Measure the length and width in inches with a tape measure. Round the measurements to the closest standard size, unless you know your futon is a custom-sized one.

    • 3

Lay a yardstick flat on the surface of the futon so it extends over the edge a few inches. Don't press down. Measure from the floor to the underside of the yardstick. If the actual measurement is about 7 to 9 1/2 inches, a cover with a 6-inch loft should fit. If it's smaller than that, choose a cover with a 4-inch loft. If it measures over 9 1/2 inches, you may need a cover with a custom loft.
