King Vs. Queen Size

Choosing between a king size and a queen size bed means understanding names and sizes of three different bed choices. The final choice may be determined by space in the room, sleeping preferences, and cost.
  1. Size

    • The queen bed is the most popular size sold in the U.S. It is 80 inches long and 60 inches wide, fitting most bedrooms comfortably. A standard king, or Eastern king, is 80 inches long and 76 inches wide, providing an extra eight inches each for two adults. A western or California king is even larger, at 84 inches long, but 72 inches wide. As bedrooms in the 2000s are larger than ever, king beds are growing in popularity.

    Sleeping Preference

    • For a single person or two adults who like being somewhat close, the queen is a comfortable size bed, with 30 inches of sleeping space each for two adults. For individuals who like space to move or who have pets and/or children in bed, the standard King provides 38 inches each for two adults.

    Cost

    • A king bed is the most expensive style of bed. It can be difficult to move as well. Bedding costs are also high, especially for the hard-to-find California king size. Queen sizes are less expensive than king, and bedding is readily available in many styles.
