How to Make a Meditation Bench Cushion

A meditation bench is a low, wide bench that allows a person to sit comfortably with their legs in front of them during meditation. Such a bench is made so that the two bench legs fold under so that it can be taken with you for use outside the home. Adding a cushion to a meditation bench improves the comfort of the bench and will allow a person to relax in meditation for longer periods of time. Sewing a cushion is not a difficult project.

Instructions

    • 1

Place kraft paper on the work table. Turn the meditation bench upside down and center the bench on the paper. Trace around the outside of the bench. Remove the bench and label the paper. Note on the paper to add 1 and 1/2-inches to each side.

    • 2

Select an upholstery fabric that is durable and comfortable. Launder the fabric to remove sizing if it is a washable fabric.

    • 3

Fold the upholstery fabric in half and pin the pattern to the fabric with at least 2-inches of fabric on all sides. Cut out your pattern with your 1 and 1/2-inch allowances on all sides.

    • 4

Cut two pieces of 2-inch grosgrain ribbon that is three times the short width measurement. The short width is the distance from the front of the bench to the rear of the bench.

    • 5

Place your bottom fabric face side down with the long side horizontal. Position one ribbon centered vertically 6-inches from each end and pin 1/2-inch from the raw edge of the fabric. Sew across each ribbon 1/2-inch from the raw edge of the fabric to secure the ribbon to the fabric.

    • 6

Place your top and bottom fabric face sides together tucking the ends of the ribbon to the inside. Seam around the cushion leaving a 6-inch opening on one end. Turn the cushion right sides out and stuff well with polyfill. Hand sew the end closed.
