Difference Between Twin & Single Mattresses

A fair amount of ambiguity exists in the world of mattress sizing. Twin and single mattresses, made to fit one person, are no exception.
  1. Identification

    • The terms "twin" and "single" mean the same thing when applied to standard mattresses and bedding. They are used interchangeably to refer to a bed that measures 39 inches wide by 75 inches long.

    Considerations

    • The term "single bed" can also refer to bunk mattresses and cot mattresses based on the fact that both of those mattresses were designed for a single person. This is not a standard use of the term, however.

    Types

    • Twin extra long (twin XL) beds are 5 inches longer than the standard twin mattress. A super single sized bed measures 9 inches wider and longer than a standard twin bed.

    Warning

    • Not all twin and single sized mattress manufacturers adhere to standard sizes. Individual manufacturers can vary the dimensions of the mattresses by several inches. Additionally, vintage or antique twin and single mattresses and beds don't always adhere to the same sizing standards as modern fixtures. Sizes and terms also vary from country to country.
