The Difference Between Plush & Pillowtop

Many consumers can easily become confused when selecting what type of new mattress to purchase. Plush and pillowtop mattresses are two terms that often confuse consumers in the market for a new mattress. A plush mattress is simply a firm mattress with 1 to 4 inches of cushion on top. A pillowtop mattress is a mattress with an additional, separate pad or cushion added on top of the mattress.
  1. Plush Mattress Advantages

    • A plush mattress is most notably known for being a good compromise between a firm mattress and a pillowtop mattress. In fact, since a plush mattress offers a softer surface without compromising firmness, many couples purchase this mattress to suit one partner who prefers a firm mattress and one partner who prefers more cushion. A plush mattress offers a bit more give than a firm mattress but more support than a pillowtop. This type of mattress is ideal for side sleepers because it disperses weight while cradling the body of the person sleeping.

    Plush Mattress Disadvantages

    • A plush mattress may have a less luxurious feel than a pillowtop mattress. Consumers who like to feel absorbed or "sunk into" their bedding will probably prefer a pillowtop mattress. Another disadvantage for consumers to consider is the longevity of the mattress. The added cushion on a plush mattress can cause the mattress to wear out more quickly than its firmer counterparts. Therefore, the life of a plush mattress may be shorter than what many consumers may prefer.

    Pillowtop Advantages

    • This additional top layer makes a pillowtop mattress the thickest type of mattress on the market. Pillowtop mattresses are recommended for people who suffer from upper back and neck pain. Additionally, pillowtops are often preferred by people who like to "sink into" their bedding because of the luxurious feel of the mattress. The movements of each sleeping partner are isolated and absorbed by extra cushion of a pillowtop, which is advantageous to those who are often prevented from sleeping by the movements of their sleeping partner.

    Pillowtop Disadvantages

    • Some pillowtop mattresses are so thick that standard bed sheets will not fit. Instead, they require special pocket sheets, which are specifically designed to handle the extra thickness. Another disadvantage to a pillowtop mattress is that such mattresses cannot be flipped to even out the wear and tear and extend the life of the mattress. Additionally, some manufacturers and retailers consider these types of mattresses to be luxurious. Therefore, they come with a heftier price tag.
