Organic Beds & Mattresses

When you consider how many hours you spend in bed every night, choosing the right bed and mattress becomes an important decision. If avoiding exposure to chemicals is important to you, consider organic options.
  1. Types

    • Organic mattresses come in two forms. Organic cotton or pure wool beds contain metal springs on the inside and certified organic coverings on the outside. Organic natural latex mattresses are made from latex taken from rubber trees. Organic beds are constructed from naturally grown and carefully harvested woods like ash. Truly organic materials will have a "certified organic" tag on them.

    Advantages

    • Organic beds have the advantage of no legacy of pesticides involved in their growth. Organic mattresses do not off-gas chemicals the way traditional mattresses do, reducing your exposure to volatile organic compounds that can be hazardous to your health.

    Considerations

    • Organic beds and mattresses cost more than traditional bedroom furniture. Organic mattresses and beds can be at risk for mildew because they are not treated against it, so be sure they are raised off the floor so air circulates around them and moisture does not have a chance to build up on their undersides.
