Choosing a Mattress Pad

If you are finding your mattress less than comfortable and suffering from a poor quality of sleep as a result, consider purchasing a mattress pad as a cheaper alternative to a brand new mattress. Whether you need a sleeping surface that is softer or firmer, or are in need of a greater level of back or joint support, you have a wide range of mattress pads to choose from.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate your mattress pad budget; knowing this figure at the outset will affect your choices and prevent you from over-spending.

    • 2

Look at a mattress pad comparison website to view and compare a wide range of products. Click on each product to view a detailed description. Websites like AllergyBuyersClub and Mattress Wiz provide independent customer reviews of mattress pads, which may help you make your choice.

    • 3

Visit your local mattress store to look at mattress pads you have read about online. Test them out in the showroom to see how comfortable they are.

    • 4

Compare mattress pads in terms of thickness, material, fabric and size. Two types of mattress pads are available: guaranteed-to-fit pads (also known as tailor fit or expand-a-grip), which will fit snugly over any depth of mattress; and fitted pads, which cover both the top and sides of most standard-sized mattresses and look like a fitted sheet with elasticated corners. Select 100 percent cotton pads for superior comfort and durability over cotton/polyester blends. Choose a high thread count of quality yarn to provide greater resistance to wear and tear. Find out what the pad is filled with; gel fiber or feather and down fills will provide more cushioning than polyester fills.

Look for a mattress pad with additional features to provide the best quality of sleeping surface. Memory foam mattress pads are sensitive to temperature and weight and conform to the exact contours of your body for maximum support and relief from aches and pains. Convoluted mattress pads, also known as egg crates, are high-density, dimpled foam pads designed to improve the distribution of body weight, reduce tossing and turning and offer increased comfort. Organic mattress pads are 100 percent natural and do not emit toxic chemicals into the environment.

    • 6

Find out what mattress pads are hypoallergenic if you suffer from allergies or are concerned about your sleeping environment. Hypoallergenic pads are resistant to dust mites, bacteria and many other irritating allergens.

Ask if the pad has been treated with fabric protection to make it stain and water-repellent.
