What Should I Consider When Buying an Air Mattress?

For homeowners who have frequent overnight guests or travel regularly, air mattresses can be extremely convenient. Many are as comfortable as traditional mattresses but do not require the same space because they can be deflated and store away. If you are in the market for an air mattress, keep basic features and qualities in mind while shopping so you wind up with a mattress that meets your needs.
  1. Size

    • Air mattresses are available in the same sizes as traditional mattresses, so you can opt for a twin, full, queen or king. When deciding which size to purchase, consider how you plan to use the mattress. For a guest bedroom, a larger size such as full, queen or king is probably your best option. A twin size air mattress may be a better choice if you plan to use it for camping; it is more likely to fit in a tent. The twin size is also a good option for children.

    Material

    • For many people, the most important quality of an air mattress is its comfort level. In most cases, the types of materials used in an air mattress determine how comfortable the mattress will be. Those made of high-density foam generally have a plush feel that many people find more comfortable. In particular, memory foam can provide effective lumbar and back support when the mattress is inflated to a firmer setting. When shopping, look for a mattress that utilizes memory or latex foam for the most comfort. Typically, models that contain at least a 2-inch layer of the material are best.

    Pump

    • Air mattresses typically require a pump for inflation. When shopping for an air mattress, make sure the accompanying pump is powerful enough for the mattress size you choose. The pump should also be easily accessible so the mattress is easy to inflate. Ideally, the pump should not make too much noise when in use. Look for the UL-approved label to ensure the pump's safety. Purchase a mattress that features at least a 3-year warranty on its pump.

    Frame

    • Depending on the air mattress's intended use, you may want to purchase a model that comes with a frame to elevate and support it. In most cases, these frames are portable and easy to fold so you can move them from room to room or carry them with you when you travel. Because a frame offers support, it also allows the mattress to bear additional weight and can make the mattress more comfortable.
