What Is the Difference Between a Full & Queen Bed Set

Often, people will confuse a queen mattress set with a full-size mattress set. The dimensions are rather close so it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference. Before the 1960s, a full-size bed was the standard for most bedrooms. Today, there are a few more options to choose from so you can pick the right size mattress for your lifestyle.
  1. Full-Size Mattress

    • A full-size mattress set is 54 inches wide, 75 inches long and 4,050 square inches. Full beds are usually suited for a single sleeper. Generally, a full-size mattress would be too small for a couple, but if two were to sleep on a full bed, there would be 27 inches in width per person.

    Queen-Size Mattress

    • A queen-size mattress is 60 inches wide, 80 inches long and 4,800 square inches. Many couples have opted to use a queen-size bed for their bedrooms and/or guest rooms. If two people were to sleep on a queen bed, these dimensions would allow for each person to have 30 inches of room in width.

    Similarities

    • Both bed sets are built the same. They are usually comprised of a metal frame, box spring and mattress. The frame offers support and raises the bed off the floor. The box spring supports the mattress and the mattress is the soft part on which we sleep. Most of the time, a queen-size mattress will have a center support within the frame to avoid sagging. Mattresses and box springs can be bought in a variety of colors and different qualities.

    Which One Is Best?

    • For a single sleeper, it would be recommended to use a full-size bed. This allows adequate comfort, but doesn't take up too much space in a bedroom. For a couple that does not mind a bigger bed, a queen is recommended. The bigger the bed, the bigger the expenses. Sheets and bedding will be more expensive for a queen bed versus the full bed.
