How to Trim Memory Foam

Memory foam was originally designed by NASA in the 1970s to help ease takeoff discomfort in astronauts. Twenty years later, memory foam was perfected for public use in Sweden in the form of a mattress that conforms to each individual's body contour, says Dr. Rick Swartzburg. Since being introduced, many manufacturers have supplied memory foam pads that are placed on top of standard mattresses and as pillows. Although pre-measured to fit many bed sizes, memory foam may need to be trimmed before you can comfortably use it at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your mattress both lengthwise and widthwise with a tape measure. Although memory foam manufacturers claim foam pads match standard mattress sizes, this is not always the case. Write your measurements down before you lay out your foam.

    • 2

Spread your foam topper out onto a flat surface, such as a table. Make sure to lay it out flat, smoothing any bulges or wrinkles in the foam. Using your mattress measurements, measure the foam with your tape measure and mark off your measurements onto the foam with a marker.

    • 3

Cut your foam along the lines you have drawn using your foam cutter. Foam cutters are available in many arts and crafts stores. You will have rough edges once you are finished cutting, but the main objective is to ensure your cuts are straight and even with your mattress.

    • 4

Snip ragged edges with a simple pair of scissors. This tidies up your work and will make the foam look better once it is under your sheets. Place your foam pad onto your mattress and place sheets and bedding over the foam. Deep-pocket sheets are best for use with foam toppers.
