How Do You Repair a Hole in Air Beds?

Air beds can be useful for camping, and can provide a comfortable sleeping solution for guests or for sleepovers. They can be deflated and rolled up easily for on the go use. However, the surface of an air mattress is soft and can be punctured, leaving the mattress unusable. Pinpricks, pets with claws, and just wear and tear can lead to leaks. Fortunately, you can patch small holes yourself instead of having to replace the entire mattress.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the air pump hose to the valve on the air mattress. Pump up the mattress with air until it is fully inflated.

    • 2

Inspect the air mattress visually for holes or punctures. Listen for the sound of air escaping. Place a small mark at the holes using the marker.

    • 3

Mix a small amount of dish soap with warm water in the spray bottle. Tighten the spray bottle top and gently shake the solution.

    • 4

Spray a fine layer of the soap and water mixture all over the surface of the air mattress.

    • 5

Push gently on the surface of the air mattress with your hands. Look for small air bubbles from the soap, which indicates a hole. Mark the hole spots with the marker. Be sure to push on different sections of the mattress as well as turn the mattress over to search for all possible holes.

    • 6

Wipe down the mattress gently with a towel until dry. Take care not to rub off the marker marks.

    • 7

Let the air out of the mattress and smooth out the deflated mattress. Locate your marks, and ensure the area is clean and dry. Apply the adhesive or rubber cement that comes with the patch repair kit to the hole. Spread the adhesive thinly over the hole and about an inch around the hole.

    • 8

Apply the patch itself, smoothing it out over the adhesive with your hand. Press out all air bubbles. Hold it firmly in place for a few minutes until it begins to stick. Allow the adhesive to dry before proceeding to the next hole patching.

Repeat these steps as needed. Let the glue cure for at least one hour. Re-inflate the mattress when the holes are patched.
