What Is the Order of Mattress Sizes: Toddler, Twin, Etc.?

Crib/Toddler

• Crib mattresses should follow a set of safety guidelines created by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. These mattresses measure 51 5/8 x 27 1/4 inches for standard cribs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that the mattress be no thicker than 6 inches for baby's safety. Mattresses for crib use should be firm, not soft. Soft mattresses present a suffocation risk. These mattresses fit most standard toddler beds, making the transition more cost effective for parents.

Twin

• The next step up is a twin. Twins measure 38 x 75 inches. These are for one person and usually used for children's beds. Since they are shorter than larger beds, some companies offer a longer twin intended for adults called a twin extra-long. These mattresses are the same width, but the length is 80 inches.

Double/Full

• A double mattress, also known as a full, is large enough for two adults. These mattresses measure 54 x 75 inches. This mattress is the middle of the road on width and is good for adults and children.

Queen

• Longer than the double and the twin, the queen bed measures 60 x 80 inches. These mattresses comfortably sleep one or two adults. The mattress is a good size for couples or a single sleeper, especially if the single sleeper moves a lot at night.

California King

• The next largest standard size mattress is the king. King mattresses measure 72 x 84 inches. The extra width of the king gives more space between two adults sharing the bed. The extra length is ideal for taller individuals or for families sharing a bed with an animal that sleeps at their feet.

Eastern King

• The largest of the mattresses is the eastern king, which comfortably sleeps two adults with plenty of room between them. These mattresses offer the most width measuring 76 x 80 inches. The width gives extra sleeping space for each adult, making this a good mattress for larger adults or for couples who move a lot in their sleep.
