What Is Good for a Sagging Mattress?

A sagging mattress can lead to more than just long nights, tossing and turning with discomfort. The lack of sleep your body endures can lead to physical ailments, such as cardiovascular disease. There are solutions to a sagging mattress to temporarily get rid of the problem and help prolong the life of the mattress.
  1. Flip the Mattress

    • Flip the mattress over so that the opposite side is facing up. You can also rotate the end of the mattress where you normally lay your head down to the opposite end. This method may allow the weight inside the mattress to be redistributed through daily usage. A remedy that goes along with flipping the mattress is to adjust your position on the mattress. Instead of settling into the same spot each night, lie on a different area.

    Cross Supports

    • Lift the mattress off the bed and install cross supports on the bed frame. These supports are typically either wood or metal and will provide additional support to a worn mattress. Three cross supports are generally used: one at the head of the mattress, one in the middle section and one near the bottom. You can also purchase a new bed frame that already has the supports installed.

    Replacement

    • A mattress is supposed to provide you with comfortable support for your head and neck area, as well as your midsection and the curves of your body. When the mattress sags significantly, sometimes it is best just to replace it. Standard mattresses are designed to have an effective lifespan of between five to seven years, so you should regularly inspect the mattress when it is in this age range and replace it if necessary.

    Health Issues

    • A sagging, uncomfortable mattress can easily cause you to lose sleep. This lost sleep eventually leads to health issues. The proper growth and repair of your body's tissues are impaired when you can't sleep. According to a 2007 "Forbes" article, "Are You Getting Enough Sleep?," lack of sleep also impairs your body's ability to use insulin, leading to obesity and diabetes, and also increases your chances of cardiovascular disease.
