Sealy

• Sealy is a popular American mattress manufacturer that began producing mattresses in 1881, in the town of Sealy, Texas. Innovations and patents on a cotton compression machine helped the small company grow, and by the year 1920 there were 23 plants licensed to produce Sealy mattresses throughout the United States. Today, there are 25 Sealy production plants in the United States, and the company has maintained first place in market share for three decades.

Tempur-Pedic

• Tempur-Pedic is a much newer American mattress manufacturer, having only been founded in 1992. It manufactures and sells memory foam mattresses and pillows. Memory foam was originally invented by NASA for use in their spacecraft, but the technology was released to the public in the 1980s. It was then developed further by European scientists, and was finally picked up upon by an American, Bob Trussell, who worked with a Danish company to develop memory foam further, and bring it to market.

Simmons

• Simmons is another old American mattress manufacturer. The company was started in 1870 by Zalmon G. Simmons, with an initial factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin, though the original products produced by the company did not include mattresses. Since then Simmons has gone on to become one of the largest mattress manufacturers in the United States, selling both spring and memory foam products. In September 2009, Simmons announced a restructuring plan under Chapter 11.

Serta

• Serta is another United States mattress company with a lengthy history. It was originally founded in 1931, not by a single person but rather by several different independent mattress manufacturers. The various independent companies began to manufacture mattresses under the Serta name, conforming to certain guidelines they set. It has 23 manufacturing facilities in the United States and more in various countries abroad.
