How to Remove a Pillow Top

Pillow-top mattresses are identifiable by the soft, separate "pillow top" attached to the mattress that provides an extra layer of comfort. This layer also extends the life of the mattress. However, since this is the surface on which people sleep, it can incur stains and other soiling. When this happens, you can either purchase an entire new mattress or remove the pillow top.

Instructions

    • 1

Take all sheets, pillows and other coverings off the bed.

    • 2

Inspect the mattress where it meets the pillow top for a zipper. If equipped with a zipper, unzip the pillow top. Wash and dry it according to the manufacturer's care instructions.

    • 3

Use a stitch puller to remove stitches attaching the pillow top to the mattress if no zipper exists. Go around the entire mattress, pulling out each stitch to completely remove the pillow top.

Roll up the pillow top after removing the stitching and dispose of accordingly.
