Dimensions

• According to the Serta website, the standard king size bed measures 76 inches wide by 79.5 inches long. The California king has slightly different dimensions and is longer, but narrower. The California king measures 72 inches wide by 83.5 inches long. The depth or height of the mattress varies, depending on the type of mattress purchased. For example, the Euro-Top king mattress from Serta measures approximately 11.5 inches high.

King vs. California King

• The California king size mattress is best for taller people because the bed is significantly longer than the other mattress sizes. Some manufacturers and store refer to the California king as the western king size. The mattress is designed for two people and gives each person approximately 36 inches of sleeping space. The traditional king size is slightly wider, giving each person a little more sleeping space, and it's not as long as the California king.

Considerations

• When you buy a Serta mattress from a retailer, check the dimensions listed on the mattress. If you choose a pillow top mattress or one of the specialty mattresses, then you also need to check the depth. The pillow top mattresses have a padded top that adds a small amount of height to the general dimensions. Look for sheets that have "deep pocket" or something similar mentioned on the package. The deep pocket indicates that the sheets are slightly bigger and designed to fit pillow top mattresses. The elastic on the pockets wraps around the mattress, keeping the sheets in place.
