Twin-Mattress-Size Buying Guide

Good-quality twin mattresses are supportive and made to last. The edges should be firm enough to make sitting on the bed easy, and the surface should be well padded for comfort. Select a twin bed made of quality materials or it will prematurely sag. A good twin mattress should last as long and be as comfortable as a larger size.
  1. Sizing

    • North American twin, or single, mattresses measure 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. It is the smallest size mattress available, with the exception of a crib mattress. In other parts of the world, they range in size from 35 to 42 inches wide and 75 to 79 inches long. An extra-long version is available in North America that measures 39 inches wide by 80 inches long. This size is commonly used in college dorms or for people who are too tall for the standard size.

    Uses

    • Twin-size mattresses are most often used by children and teenagers; some adults who sleep alone and want to save space use them as well. The beds are comfortable enough for one person and are an economical way to fit more beds into one room. Twin mattresses can be used in a standard twin-bed frame or in a bunk bed, day bed or trundle bed. Two twin mattresses can be placed side-by-side to make a king size bed for couples who wish to have different types of mattresses.

    Comfort

    • Comfort is how the mattress feels when you lay down. Finding a twin mattress that feels comfortable to you is personal preference. On innerspring mattresses, this is typically influenced by the upholstery cushion and quilting. On a memory foam or latex mattress, it is determined by the density of the foam. Air-filled mattresses have a top cushion layer, but the comfort level can be adjusted by inflating or deflating air inside the chamber.

    Support

    • The support of a mattress is what holds your body in correct alignment. A twin mattress with good support will compress under heavier areas, such as your hips and shoulders, while still holding your entire body comfortably. Too much or too little support can cause pressure points, back pain, muscle aches and even headaches. Support in innerspring mattresses comes from the coils, while the same factors that contribute to comfort in other beds also determine the support.

    Durability

    • Finding a durable twin mattress that will provide comfort and support for a number of years is important. The quality of materials and construction largely affect its lifespan. For an innerspring mattress, look for one with edges that won't break down and coils that are sturdy enough to resist sagging. Foam mattresses should have high resiliency ratings to hold up to the weight of your body. Purchase beds made by manufacturers known for quality and customer satisfaction.

    Lifespan

    • Innerspring mattresses with padding on both sides should be flipped over and rotated twice a year. Rotate nonflip innerspring mattresses, foam and adjustable air beds two times per year to wear the surface evenly. Doing this will extend the life of the twin mattress.
