Do I Need Slats With a Latex Mattress?

When choosing a new mattress, you must make a decision from among a wide array of options. If you decide to go with a latex mattress, you'll have more freedom in what type of base you use for your bed. Your climate helps determine if slats make a good option for your bed.
  1. Latex Mattress

    • Latex mattress can be formed from either synthetic latex or from milk harvested from rubber trees. Whether your latex mattress is synthetic or organic, it consists of a latex core surrounded by a cotton covering. Latex mattresses offer benefits including firm support, resistance to dust mite infestation and the ability to last for up to 20 years. You don't need to use a box spring with a latex mattress.

    Platforms

    • Latex mattresses are well-suited for use on platform beds. Because they don't require a box spring, you can lay a latex mattress flat on the top of a platform bed. It won't rise as high as a traditional mattress and box spring, so your bed will not be too high for comfort. If you live in a humid climate, laying a latex mattress directly on a platform does increase the risk that mold will grow on the underside of the mattress. Mold growth can discolor your mattress and produces an unpleasant, musty smell. Exposure to mold can trigger health problems like skin rashes and difficulty breathing.

    Prevention

    • The risk of mold growth is reduced by using slats to support a latex mattress. The slats allow air circulation around the underside of the mattress, which reduces moisture buildup. If you have a platform bed, sliding slats between your latex mattress and the platform will lift the mattress enough to prevent mold. Running a dehumidifier in your home also reduces the risk.

    Considerations

    • If you choose not to use slats under your latex mattress, check the underside regularly for mold growth. You need to rotate your mattress every month and flip it every six months in order to distribute wear and make it last as long and as comfortably as possible. Every month when you rotate it, check the underside of the mattress for the dark discoloration that indicates mold growth. If you have a mattress cover, look inside of it for mold.
