How Are Pillow Top Mattresses Assembled?

• Pillow top mattresses have an inner core of metal coils; the number of coils, gauge of the metal wires, and construction of the coils all play a part in determining the comfort and support of the mattress.

Padding

• The padding layers are for comfort and keeping the springs from poking through. The comfort layers are made of cotton, polyester, memory foam or latex foam. The layers are tufted and sewn together to prevent shifting.

Pillow Top

• Pillow top mattresses have added comfort layers sewn in a pillow covering the entire mattress. This layer promotes a better night's sleep by easing pressure points to reduce tossing and turning.

Considerations

• The pillow top layer is not removable, and once it develops body impressions from being compressed every night, the only solution is to replace the mattress. A separate pillow top pad can be added to mask the sag, but it will not completely fix the problem.
